New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users using such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
